Episode 5 – RIP SEO?


Every year around about this time, articles appear claiming that SEO is dead. How many times can something die? The disturbing part is that a lot of these appear on highly influential online business/entrepreneur type websites.  I’m here to tell you, SEO is far from dead, but it is evolving.



Hello and welcome to another episode of Let’s Engage, the podcast, where we talk about the ins and outs, the pros and cons, the scams to what’s real in the digital marketing industry. 

You know, every single year, for as long as I can remember or as long as I’ve been in this industry, I’ve read articles, I see headlines, and they all say “SEO is dead”. Every single year. And you know what disturbs me the most? A lot of these articles come from major business influential websites. We’re not just talking about a little blogger here and a little blogger there expressing their opinion when things don’t go right for them with the methods that they’re using for their clients. I’m talking about rather large and very influential magazines or online magazines. 

It kind of really does worry me because as a business owner, you would be very scared once you see these headlines because you think, wow, I’m pumping thousands of dollars every month into SEO and digital marketing, and if it’s not working, even though you probably are seeing some form of results, it’s a form of fear mongering, really. And just recently I read two articles and like I said before, they are from fairly influential websites written by obviously independent contributors, if you like, or authors. And the funny thing was that they’re bagging the conventional methods, that have been in use since the Internet began, basically. And if you read right down to the very end of their article they’re promoting some form of a new method. 

One was talking about some video log or video blog, rather, that they were promoting and how that is the way to go now. Another one was trying to take you away from, you know, organic SEO to paid advertising through Facebook ads and Google ads and whatnot. It just made me laugh, but it also makes me very, very angry. I can sit here and I can tell you with 100 percent confidence that SEO is not dead. If anything, SEO is evolving. And what I mean by that is simply this. SEO is not what it used to be 10 years ago. It’s not what it used to be even five years ago, and definitely it is not what it used to be even one year ago, and especially with what happened last year with this whole covid-19 thing, SEO and digital marketing is even more important for your website and your business. And SEO is not going anywhere and it’s not dead and it is not even dying, because as long as the Internet is going to be around, SEO will be around. Sure, its evolving. Methods change. Things that worked a few years ago might not work today. Even if they do, Google is a lot more savvy and, you know, these potential penalties and whatnot, that’s worst case scenario. Best case scenario is if you are still doing dodgy stuff as far as Google is concerned, they just wont rank you high. They’re not going to penalise you. You just won’t get any rewards for it at all. 

So if you are a business owner and you read these articles, you see these headlines, or even if you get emails from other people saying SEO is dead, you’re wasting your money, you should be doing this with us, ignore it. Obviously, if you are not happy with your digital marketing agency, you need to look into it. You need to educate yourself. As I’ve kept saying before, you need to know what goes on. You need to know what results you’re getting. You need to be happy with the results that you are actually getting and obviously, you need to be unhappy with the results you are not getting. 

So, very complex subject. But to put it all into a nutshell, SEO is not dead. It never will be dead. Not in 2021, not in 2020, not in 2019, seventeen, sixteen, fifteen, fourteen and not even into the future. SEO is here to stay. And naturally, the only way it’s going to work for you or for anybody else is if you get an agency or an individual who knows this stuff, who is educated. And you, as I’ve said a hundred times before, you need to be educated in what goes on within this industry, and you need to know what your SEO agency is doing at all times and hold them accountable.
